Meeting

During the last phone conversation and informal interview I had with Michael, I mentioned the dates I was going to be back up in Leeds and we had arranged to meet when I was back.

We had met in their office that is located in Headingly. It was good to meet Michael and Liam Baxendale who is another owner and manager of Set One Twenty. We had discussed some of the work I had been working on and I got some feedback on some of the design I had been doing for them. They really liked some of the designs but then went on to mention that their head designer was not going to as busy as he had anticipated with his new job in London for the first couple of months so they had said that I would be working with him to brand the night using some of the existing designs they had done.

This was understandable as they have been working with their designer from the start of the company so there is obviously no question of reliability and trust and he is also a co-founder so he would have also had some input into this decision also.

MiNT Sessions Logo work

After the short briefing on the project I had over the phone from Michael about the event branding, I made a start on the logo.

I had tried a few different approaches but aimed to design something that fit the description of what they said Michael and his colleagues had said they wanted from the logo.

They made it clear that it needed to represent the venue through the use of the existing 'MiNT' logo and genre of music which the night will be and they expressed the target audience was 18-25 aged Deep house music enthusiasts and university students.

Set One Twenty Phone Interview

After the initial conversation I had with one of the owners of Set One Twenty, Michael McMahon, we had simply discussed my interest within the position.

A few weeks after the initial conversation I was again contacted by Michael regarding more details about the job and had an informal interview over the phone. We had mainly spoke about my previous work experience and educational past.

After speaking about some general information on the both of us Michael went on to discuss exactly what it was he was looking for and sort of jobs I would be looking at doing throughout the year. He had mentioned that one of reasons he was looking for junior designer was because the companies co-founder and graphic designer had moved to London as he had found a full time job there and would not be able to manage all of the design work for Set One Twenty.

Majority of the design work I would be receiving to do would be weekly promotional artwork for both print and screen based media but he also went on to mention that due to their residency with the MiNT Club & Warehouse venues in Leeds they were given the opportunity to re launch an existing night which had not been as successful in recent years and I would also be in charge of the branding for that new night – MiNT Sessions which would to taking over Teknicolor.

I felt that is an amazing opportunity as event design and event branding has always been something which I have been interested in and have never had the chance to do, with the company being situated in Leeds it would also be very convenient for me throughout the final year to gain some extra money and would count towards PPP and gaining a placement, although this would be more of a one day a week type of placement.

After this I decided to start gathering some relevant images which would inform my logo design for this project.

PPP 3 - Studios

As the final year approaches I decided to start having a look at the studios I was considering to contact for visits and placements.

I had looked at a variety of places ranging from within the Uk and overseas.

Set One Twenty Work Opportunity

At the start of august I was approached about a freelance work opportunity for leeds based event company, Set One Twenty. I was aware of the company before this and had even been to a couple of their events. They specialise in club nights and live gigs throughout Leeds, Sheffield and Ibiza that boast the best in the latest and biggest underground deep house, techno and disco acts. Set One Twenty had been started up in 2012 and is now in its 3rd year running.

The role I was approached about was for a junior graphic designer, not much information had been given when it was mentioned but as I had previously been introduced to both the owners and founders of the company, it would not be an issue for them to get hold of me.
